Your First Jiu Jitsu Class

If you are new to the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, your first Jiu Jitsu class might be a bit intimidating. Once you have found the perfect gym and signed up for classes, you might begin wondering what to expect from your first session.

A helpful gym, like Jiu Jitsu Nation, will feature a staff of trainers that are happy to answer any questions you have about the experience, so don’t be afraid to ask. In order to better prepare you for your first Jiu Jitsu training experience, here are some tips to help you get ready for your first class.

Dress Appropriately

The first thing you need to take care of is your apparel. Not every gym has the same policy on this, so it is best to ask before you go on a shopping spree. In some cases, a special gi (traditional Jiu Jitsu uniform) is required at all classes.

Other gyms are fine with a t-shirt with sweatpants or athletic shorts. Be sure to avoid clothing with lots of pockets or belt loops. Excessively baggy clothing is also something to avoid.

As far as protective gear, each gym has different policies on what is and isn’t allowed, so be sure to ask your gym officials before arriving.

Practice Proper Hygiene

This is a crucial aspect of your preparation. Keep your toenails and fingernails are short to protect those you might come into contact with.

The close-quarters nature of Jiu Jitsu training means that you should consider those you’ll be coming into contact with. If your hair is long, keep it in a ponytail or bun during training sessions. Piercings or other adornments should also be removed.

Arrive Early

This gives you a chance to meet your instructor if you haven’t already. It also grants you some time to stretch on your own before the class begins.

Jiu Jitsu classes include a warm-up and start promptly at the scheduled time. If you need to devote some time stretching a particular part of your body, it is up to you to allow yourself time to do so.

The Warm-Up

Each class starts with a warm-up design to get your body ready for the forthcoming activity. This warm-up is a part of the overall training, so you should always take it seriously and pay close attention to any instructions.

This period is designed to not only prepare your body for activity, but also for falling safely. Warm-ups vary from gym to gym, so come prepare to pay attention.

Technical Training

This portion of the class is devoted to teaching you the various techniques off Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This usually involves being partnered with another student and putting words into action as you practice techniques on each other.

It is vital to pay close attention to your instructor, as you will practice these techniques repeatedly throughout your training.

This is not always included in beginner-level courses, but it is an important part of training and regarded as the best way to put what you have learned into action. You will go against a partner and attempt to try out your new arsenal of techniques.

Starting on your knees, you start by shaking hands and then “rolling.” As you both try out different techniques, the round stops when someone taps out.

Enjoy Your First Class

As you prepare for your first class, remember to have fun and enjoy yourself. Don’t be afraid to ask any questions; your instructors are there to help and guide you through the process.
