Jiu Jitsu is a form of mixed martial arts that has been gaining popularity over the past few years, especially in Middle Tennessee. In February 2020 a local 12-year-old boy won the Pan American International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation Championships (IBJJF) for his division. This accomplishment shows how the practice of Jiu Jitsu has risen in Middle Tennessee. What has led to this recent rise and can the interest continue to go up?
The Appeal of the Mat
Jiu Jitsu is considered to be a game of chess while sparring. Predicting your opponent’s next move while holding a strong stance over them. Did you know that almost all MMA fighters train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu due to the success other practitioners have received in the past? Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is an art based in ground fighting. This type of fighting allows for a lot of control for the trainee while on their backs and their feet. Learning control – not only physically but also mentally – while training is a big reason why many begin training in the art of Jiu Jitsu. By applying lessons those in training learn from the mat to their everyday lives they are able to conquer more obstacles due to the control and patience they’ve gained.
As the popularity of a sport rises, there are bound to be competitions for those who are training to show their skills and train with someone on their same level rather than training with an instructor. Middle Tennessee has seen two major wins for Jiu Jitsu students in the last year. On top of the 12-year-old winning the 2020 IBJJF Championship for his division, there was also a winner in November of 2019. A student from Nolensville, Tennessee claimed second place at a Jiu Jitsu World Championship.
The Success of Jiu Jitsu
As mentioned earlier, the rise of Jiu Jitsu in Middle Tennessee has gone up over the past few years. The success and progression in popularity of Jiu Jitsu can be proven by the recent winning places held by students in Middle Tennessee in championship competitions. This representation shows that Jiu Jitsu is being put on the map as a strong sport to participate in throughout the Middle Tennessee area. The lessons learned on the mat, the strength gained, the confidence in oneself, and the confidence to execute set goals is all one piece of the roadmap of the success that Jiu Jitsu has seen all over Middle Tennessee.
